What is Shame?

Where did all this Shame come from and why won't it leave?

Shame stems from the sense of powerlessness and violation we experience. We may often internalize these negative messages or experiences and blame ourselves- that is where shame is born. We may feel responsible for what happened, even though the fault lies entirely with the perpetrator.

Society’s stigmas and misconceptions about physical, psychological, physical or sexual abuse can also contribute to this misplaced shame.

Shame can create a significant barrier to forming healthy, intimate relationships. It can leave us to feel unworthy of love and fear vulnerability, making it hard to trust others. Empowerment and self-compassion are crucial in allowing us to reclaim our sense of worth, penetrate shame and come back to a place of safety and confidence.

Addressing this shame and rebuilding self-worth helps form more fulfilling, trusting relationships. Forming and maintaining healthy relationships is critical to our survival- but the most important relationship we'll ever have is the one we build with ourselves.
